Port of Cebu
Outline
The Port of Cebu was already a trading center before the Philippines' pre-Spanish colonial period that started in the 1500s. It was declared open to world trade by Spain in the 1800s and continued as a major port during the American colonial era (1898 to 1946). At present, the Port of Cebu continues to be a major seaport, serving as the homeport of approximately 80% of the Philippine's total domestic shipping industry.
The Port of Cebu was separated from Philippine Ports Authority system in 1992 with the creation of the Cebu Port Authority, or CPA. CPA administers all ports, government or private and all seas, lakes, rivers and all other navigable inland waterways within the Province and cities of Cebu.
The purposes and objectives of CPA are to integrate and coordinate the planning, development, construction and operations of ports and port facilities within its territorial jurisdiction; to enhance the flow of international and domestic commerce passing through or utilizing the regional ports; and, to promote regional development by providing support services to sustain the growth of export and other priority industries.
